q-a

Are EMS cigars better?

When asked if the 'English Market Selection' was superior, the Cubans responded with an emphatic "no". All wholesalers purchase from the Cubans at the same price, any differential is due to either higher tax levels or excessive margins, as in the case of Sweden. EMS is merely a marketing strategy to make up for high taxes in the UK.

q-a

Why are prices so low?

We are located in a 'Duty Free Zone', which enables us to export our cigars without paying import duty. Our product is solely for export and cannot be retailed to the general public. Other retailers who, having paid import duty, should they wish to export, face an extremely lengthy and difficult process to recover their cigars import levy.

I received a box with 2 Cuban seals, the one underneath had been cut and then covered with a new seal.

From time to time the Cubans complete a final inspection,  they then reseal and ship, on occasion they forget to reseal. It is also possible for seals to moisten and drop off while stored in the humidor. We will never open a box, even when asked, if any box that has been opened, this has been done by cuban quality control.

We send out boxes in exactly the same state as they come into us from our supplier.  If you have any doubts about authenticity, I recommend you contact them.

Another point to be aware of, is that as a general rule habanos only permits distributors to sell into their own country and the hologram and bar code identifies the individual distributor. In these times of increasing international trade, it is common practice to endeavour to remove these identifying marks, this does occasionally get missed!

q-a

I notice that cuban cigars never state what wrapper they have. Do they have just one type such as maduro, or natural?

The wrappers of cuban cigars come in over 67 different shades. There is no established shade for any given type of cigar, instead the focus is upon getting the same shade for the cigars, in an individual box.

q-a

q-a

I see you are duty free, but does this mean that if I order from say Australia, that I do not pay import taxes?

No. That would mean that we had some control over foreign government agencies. This is obviously not the case. We have no idea what duties will be levied upon arrival. We sell to a lot of different countries and do not have specific information on what they will or will not do. We do not pay your duties for you if you should incur any.

q-a

Can I choose a specific factory code?

No, as only about 5 people in Cuba know what the codes are, and they are constantly changed. We certainly don’t know the codes and nor do the distributors.

q-a

What country receives the best quality of Cuban cigars?

They all get the same quality. Cigar quality can vary from batch to batch and each smoker’s opinions will vary too. The international distributors all know each other, they all pay the same price and they would not stand for it if one was getting better quality than another. Claims of ‘my representative gets the cream of the crop’ are false.

  1. Cigars are packed into Master Cases at each factory. The master case contains some 25-30 boxes of cigars and is stamped on the outside with the contents, a date code, and a factory code. A blank is left for the distributor.
  2. Boxes are then shipped to a central holding warehouse next to the baseball stadium in Havana. This location will change sometime this year. Orders are then delivered to this warehouse by the official distributors. Seven people work here processing the orders.
  3. When they get an order, they open the box, inspect 5 to 7 boxes and reseal them (hence the double stamp). If they are fine they close them and place a distributor code on the outside of the master case. They do not put good ones to the left and bad ones to the right.
  4. Anyone with a supposed ‘cherry picking’ license would also know the factory code. And no one does.

q-a

Do you ship rebanded?

No, original boxes and bands only, the only cigars shipped unboxed and unbanded are our own bespokes.

q-a

Can I choose wrapper tone or colour?

No, we do not select wrapper colours.

q-a

What can I do about a tight draw?

Most Cuban cigars are hand rolled, it is not uncommon to have some of your cigars rolled too tightly, resulting in a tight draw. The cause of this is the filler tobacco being bunched too tightly in some areas inside your cigar, resulting in a knot or plug that prevents a proper airflow/draw.

When you smoke a cigar and feel that the cigar has a tight draw, delicately use your thumb and index finger and squeeze the entire body of the cigar.  Try to feel for a hard spot.  If you do feel a hard spot on your cigar, delicate squeeze it with your thumb and finger repeatedly as you continue to smoke the cigar.  (Don't squeeze too hard or you may damage your cigar.) Continuing to smoke the cigar while occasionally squeezing it will soften the filler tobacco from the heat and make the filler tobacco more pliable and loose.  This is usually enough to smooth out the tobacco obstruction and improve the draw.

If that doesn't work, you can also purchase a cigar tool called a "cigar spike".  This tool is a thin and smooth metal spike/needle that you would insert into the cigar from the cigar head.  As you insert the spike into the cigar, it will create an opening through the filler tobacco and improve the draw.  (Be sure to insert the spike into the cigar straight and centered.  Inserting it crookedly can damage the cigar and cause an uneven burn.)

The tool is commonly called a cigar spike but there are also other names for it.  It is also known as a "cigar auger", "cigar awl" and "marlin spike".  These can be found at most cigar and pipe smoking stores, it is also possible to use any type of long, metal skewer on a plugged cigar.

A tight draw can also be a humidification issue, try letting your cigars sit in your humidor for a longer period of time. Be sure to rotate your cigars, periodically, while in your humidor, this will evenly humidify all your cigars.

What is Nitrogen Packing?

We are now very pleased able to offer our customers the advantage of Nitrogen Modified Atmospheric Packaging (MAP).

Nitrogen (N2) is a non-reactive gas that has no smell or taste. It is used as a filler gas to replace oxygen and prevent spoilage and package collapse.

    It has two major benefits.
  1. Delicate products are protected as the sealed bag is slightly puffed with gas, preventing any possibility of crushing.
  2. The removal of oxygen and replacement with nitrogen retains the product in the same condition it was at time of packing.

Our bespokes will be nitrogen packed.

At checkout all other boxes will have the choice of vacuum sealing or nitrogen packing.

q-a

Can I request a sealed box?

There are times when quality control will complete a final inspection and break open a box and then reseal, on occasion they forget to reseal. It is also possible for seals to moisten and drop off while stored in the humidor. We can never guarantee you will receive an unopened box.
